Image by Daleberts via Flickr When adventurers come to Yosemite and the big trees, they think Mariposa Grove of the Giant Sequoias located near the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park. This is the largest grove of giant sequoias in Yosemite and well worth the visit. But what many don’t know is that just a few miles from giants is a hidden treasure named Nelder Grove this is a secluded 1,540 acre stand of the old giants.
John Muir found John Nelder, for whom the grove is named, living as a hermit amidst the big trees when he wandered through this area in 1875.
Nelder Grove boasting of 101 Giant Sequoias as well has evidence of others cut down by logging operations at the turn of the century. The grove is peaceful without the large crowds that frequent the Mariposa Grove. When at Nelder Grove take the 1 mile walk down the Shadow The Giants Trail an easy self-interpretive trail that features the Giant Sequoia trees. In the springtime masses of dogwoods are in bloom, replaced in the fall by glorious reds and oranges. It’s a perfect place to spend time picnicing and getting to know these gentle giants. Another trail leads from the Nelder Grove Campground on a 1 mile loop to the Bull Buck Tree, a contender for the worlds largest Giant Sequoia. Nelder Grove is one of the few places where you can get up-close-and-personal with these beautiful trees.

This place looks beautiful. I remember as a kid standing next to a massive Sequoia in Yosemite and feeling in awe of how large and beautiful it was. I also really like the cabin. Nedler must have built it himself.

As someone who wishes to follow the study of botany I always held in high regards theses marevelous trees that have been with us since the beginning of time. They are a marvel of nature and if they were an animal they would have been placed on the endangered species list by now. To find out about a place as wonderful as this one, brings joy to my heart.
Thank you!

The hidden treasure Nelder Grove looks so peaceful and wonderful in the picture. It’s good that large crowds don’t come at Nelder Grove. I cannot resist myself from bookmarking this superb page: http://delicious.com/britneyvaughan

The trees are really beautiful and long, we don’t get them that long down here. Thank you for posting these images.

I have visited these majestic giants. I had only a day among them, so I chose the most accessible. I did not know about the secluded cabin. Interesting story.

Thanks for highlighting such a beautiful spot. John Muir had an amazing ability to find them. I hope to check out Nelder Grove next season.

Mmmm, incredible pics! I have friends who camp in Yosemite every year and invite me to come each time – yet I just haven’t made it. These pics are so inspiring. Perhaps I’ll finally get there in summer 2009.
